While it isn’t always necessary to have a degree to teach here, one thing that is useful is speaking a little bit of Spanish, so if you can brush up on your school Spanish classes, this will put you in good stead for making a good impression.

Doulos Discovery School is a Christian bilingual school in Jarabacoa. As well as full-time teaching staff they also offer internships for those who have recently finished high school or university. Their staff are referred to as ‘missionaries’ and are asked to provide a high-quality spiritual and academic instruction for students. You need to “possess a personal and mature relationship with Jesus Christ” as well as having a degree and teaching qualification. DR1 has a classified message board where you can ask the online community for help in finding a job or volunteering position in the Dominican Republic. You can also search through past posts to read any helpful information that might lead you to a place to work. The Instituto Cultural Dominico-Americano teaches students of all ages. Applicants can submit their CV by email or use the contact page. Peace Villages has a number of programs you can get involved in. While teaching English isn’t the main activity, it’s a great way to get experience and to get into the country. As well as volunteers, there are also internships for those with the correct qualifications. Supporting Guasa is a grassroots NGO with a focus on sustainable education. UCNE looks for English speaking teachers who are graduates in education related subjects or who have experience of working with children. Applicants must be aged between 21-38, and will need intermediate Spanish ability. Contracts are for 6 months or one year, starting either in September or January. Working hours are 8am – 3pm, with lunch provided at school. The salary is $650 per month, and teachers are provided with a shared apartment with utilities included.
