Sophie’s Story

Sophie (20) got in touch with us to share her TEFL story. You can read about her motivation for TEFL below. Warning: Blog post contains first-hand experience of living abroad, including romance and a very positive outlook.

In 2013/2014 I spent a year in Barcelona studying an Art Foundation Degree. I did find there was a lot of advertising for English teachers, to teach both in schools and privately. While I was out there I fell in love with the culture, the city, and a Spaniard!

I returned to England for a year to work full time to save up to return to Barcelona. I decided to take the TEFL course as this would open my options for when I returned.  Even though I worked full time, it was not a problem taking the 80-hour online TEFL course . I would work during the day and study in the evenings and on my days off. I had plenty of time to complete the tests and assignments and wasn’t pushed for time. My tutor was very helpful and would explain sections I found hard to complete and gave me tips on how to improve assignments.

When I return to Spain this July, the TEFL course will give me a headstart in finding a good teaching job over other native speakers.  I will study an online degree out there, but will use my TEFL to socialise with Spanish people and to earn a little money on the side.

I will start by teaching privately as this will give me some more flexibility at the start, then as I get more comfortable with my studies I will hopefully teach a group of people, preferably in a school. I cannot wait to see how many doors open and look forward to experiencing new things!

I think completing a TEFL course is a great opportunity which will be useful if you wanted to live or study abroad. Also the online courses really work well if you have a busy schedule or are working full-time.
